The match that fully changed my opinion was the Copa del Rey second leg quarter-final game against Barcelona. Of course, Betis were in la segunda at the time and had lost the first leg to Pep Guardiola’s men 5-0. However, they took it to Barcelona, gave them an almighty shock and were 3-1 up at half time – two goals from Jorge Molina and one from Arzu for Betis, and a little Argentinian called Messi scored the Catalans’ goal.
Betis couldn’t quite do enough to win overall, but they showed fight, heart and were fantastic entertainment. The atmosphere inside the Benito Villamarín was electric and there was green and white everywhere. This was the start of my journey to beticismo.
From that moment on I began to see how being a Bético infiltrated everyday life in Sanlúcar and in Seville when I made the long bus journey to see this most fantastic of cities.
When I got back home in the summer of 2011 I didn’t want to lose my new found passion. I began to write for various Spanish football websites primarily about Betis; match previews, reports and news items. It was also a good way for me to keep learning the language, of which I knew nothing when I first went out to Spain.
A few years later it was time for me to make the jump and create my own website so I could manage my own writing and develop a keen following. I wanted to deliver Betis news in English and share my passion with whichever football fans stumbled across my ramblings.
Since I’ve been a Bético there have been plenty of highs and lows already, and I’m well aware that this is a major part of supporting Real Betis. The clubs motto typifies this – Viva er Betis manqué pierda – long live Betis even when we lose. There is always a slightly looming and pessimistic feeling that it’s all going to go a bit pear shaped, but that’s fine, the club will still be here and so will the fans.
Of course we want to qualify for Europe every year but then deep down there is something fun and exciting about dropping down to la segunda, going on a good winning run, getting promoted again and giving the big boys a good game, only to have your hopes dashed when you lose to Eibar 4-0 at home. Getting relegated at the time is not fun, but it’s the journey back that makes it.
Despite the inconsistency, poor performances, poor management, dashed hopes and dodgy ownership, you develop a feeling that doesn’t leave and this is why I’m proud to support Real Betis Balompié.
