By Ben Hardman, Creator of blogbetis.com.
I’m a man from Salford, Manchester. Born and raised in England, still living here with no ties to Spain, nevermind the city of Seville and Real Betis. My nearest team is Manchester United, who I’ve supported since birth – but I’m also a Betis fan. Soy Bético.
How has this happened and why do I now run my own website dedicated to Real Betis Balompié?
It’s a question I get asked quite a lot; by friends, family, work colleagues, people I meet. “Why on earth do you spend a chunk of your life on this niche subject?” Often with a slightly confused expression.
In short it’s because the green and white fever has taken a hold of me. The feeling that many talk about, the family and the community atmosphere, the manquepierda; all has drawn me in.
My explanation is usually accompanied with this story…
I came to Andalucía in 2010 having finished my university studies to join my girlfriend teaching primary school children in what became a place very close to my heart, Sanlúcar de Barrameda. It was here where my verdiblanco passion began to flourish.
I’d always loved football and came out to Spain wanting to support a team, but not sure who. The nearest teams I knew about were Jerez, Cádiz, Sevilla, Betis and more further afield Málaga. Now a confession. I must admit that when I first came over I thought I’d support Sevilla. They play in red like my home team United and they are well known. I even watched a few games wanting to support them but it just didn’t feel right.
As I got to know a few sanluqueños, I began to educate myself. I noticed the local team, Atlético Sanluqueño, played in green and white and the green and white flag of Andalucía was flying all around the town; subtle subliminal messages trying to tell me something.
